Iran ceasefire lapses, Hormuz takes another hit
The US-Iran ceasefire expired August 17 with no extension; Trump ruled out renewing it and called for Iran's surrender, while also threatening Oman over its Hormuz mediation efforts. Hours later, UKMTO reported a vessel struck by an "unknown projectile" while transiting the strait, damaging the engine room and causing a crew casualty — the Omani coastguard assisted survivors. A senior Iranian official told Reuters Tehran is shifting to a "fully offensive" posture if diplomacy fails to break the US naval blockade. Vessel crossings remain in the single digits a day, down from 130+ before the war. Qatar says it still backs Oman-Iran talks.

Global bond selloff hits a new gear, drags stocks with it
Germany's 10-year Bund yield pushed to 3.26%, its highest since April 2011; the US 30-year hit its highest in roughly two decades near 5.3%. The pan-European STOXX 600 fell to a two-week low, its worst day in a month, with the DAX and CAC each down over 1%. Drivers: swelling sovereign debt issuance (some of it AI-datacenter-linked), sticky inflation, and the Hormuz stalemate all landing in the same week. It's the same story from the Iron desk's watch list a month running — see THEMES below.

August primaries: Florida, Alaska, Wyoming vote
Florida held its 2026 primary Aug 18 with a crowded congressional and statewide ballot, including a competitive GOP field in the 19th District. Alaska's primary (Aug 18) featured contested US Senate and House races. Wyoming's primaries land today, Aug 19. Routine electoral mechanics, but the results start shaping the fall midterm map.

China's LandSpace lands a rocket booster — a world first for stainless steel
Zhuque-3's second flight launched Aug 18 from Jiuquan and landed its first stage roughly 390km downrange in Gansu Province eight minutes later, successfully deploying the Honghu 03 satellite along the way. It's China's first-ever land recovery of an orbital-class first stage, the first by a private Chinese company, and the world's first stainless-steel booster recovered after orbital flight — LandSpace becomes only the fourth entity ever (after SpaceX, Blue Origin, and China's own Chang Zheng 10B) to pull it off.

Anthropic raises its own catastrophic-misalignment rating — and reveals an unreleased "Model 2"
Anthropic's August risk report bumped its internal catastrophic-misalignment rating from "very low" to "low," citing broader uncertainty rather than one failed test. The same report discloses "Model 2" — an internal frontier model "noticeably more capable" than Mythos 5 — which Anthropic says has no external release plan pending full predeployment safety review.

Nikkei took the hardest overnight hit, down 2.6% as Japan's own 10-year yield closes in on 3% and the same higher-for-longer story that's rattling Europe crosses the Pacific; Hang Seng held up on domestic support. US futures carried Tuesday's weakness into the open — Nasdaq futures were down over 1% at last check, chip and AI-capex names (Nvidia, Meta, Tesla, Oracle) leading losers on the term-premium repricing. QQQ was marked 716.45 pre-market, essentially flat to Tuesday's 717.51 close. The 30-year Treasury's push to ~5.3% is the number to watch — it's a level not seen in roughly two decades.

📰 Themes Running the Cycle

Day 48Higher-for-longer, now a currency/bond crisis
What's new: the selloff kept accelerating overnight — Bund 3.26% (15-year high), US 30Y ~5.3% (two-decade high), Japan's 10Y nearing 3%. It's now visibly cross-asset: Nikkei -2.6%, Europe's worst day in a month, Nasdaq futures leading US weakness. Home Depot's clean beat/reaffirm is the first data point testing whether the "soft consumer" read survives contact with Target/Lowe's (today) and Walmart (tomorrow).
Day 48Iran: succession, Hormuz & the war that won't stay ended
What's new: the ceasefire formally lapsed Aug 17, and within hours a vessel took an unidentified projectile hit transiting the strait — the clearest sign yet the "quiet corridor" pattern is breaking down. Trump's rhetoric hardened (threatening Oman, calling for Iran's surrender); Tehran is signaling a shift to "fully offensive" posture. Watching whether this stays an overnight-only pattern or produces a daytime incident.
Day 48AI capex goes physical → the AI trade cracks
What's new: Anthropic's own risk-rating increase (very low → low on catastrophic misalignment) adds a governance data point on top of the pricing war (Gemini 3.7 Flash three weeks after 3.6, OpenAI's Ultrafast preview) and the bond-market angle — AI-datacenter debt issuance is now cited as a direct contributor to the term-premium repricing hitting equities this week.

🔭 So-What for the Forest

Risk tone leans defensive into the open: the bond-yield story has gone from a rates-desk conversation to something visibly moving equity futures, and it's arriving the same week as three major retail prints that will either confirm or puncture the "soft consumer" narrative. The transmission channel to our tape is direct — Nasdaq futures were the weakest of the major US indices overnight, and mega-cap AI names (Nvidia, Meta, Tesla, Oracle) are leading premarket losses on the same term-premium repricing. The single exogenous wildcard remains Hormuz: last night's vessel strike is the first daytime-adjacent incident since the ceasefire lapsed, and a confirmed attribution or an escalation during RTH would move oil and risk sentiment fast. Watch Target/Lowe's guidance language and the 2pm FOMC minutes for any dovish tell against a backdrop where yields, not earnings, are setting the tone.

🚀 The Good Stuff

A private Chinese rocket nails a landing nobody's pulled off before
LandSpace's Zhuque-3 launched from the Gobi-adjacent Jiuquan complex Aug 18, dropped its satellite into orbit, then flew its first stage back down to a pinpoint vertical landing 390km away — the world's first successful recovery of a stainless-steel orbital booster, and the first time any private Chinese company has landed a rocket at all. Four companies on Earth can now say they've caught a first stage: SpaceX, Blue Origin, China's state Chang Zheng program, and now this one, on only its second flight.

The world's best miniature basketball shooter beat his own record — again
Nicholas "Nickybucketz" DeMarinis, a competitive Pop-A-Shot player, sank a Guinness-record miniature basketball shot from 102 feet 11.76 inches — topping the 101-foot-8 mark he'd set himself back in March. He's also the record holder for most consecutive mini-basketball makes (232, set last September). There is, apparently, a whole competitive circuit for this.
